Hillsdale College Features the Detroit Historical Society’s Documenting Detroit
HILLSDALE, Mich. — Hillsdale College continues its 2023-2024 Professional Artist Series with an exhibit of documentary photography from the students of prolific Detroit photographer Bill Rauhauser. Students and community members can visit the exhibit, titled “Documenting Detroit” in the Daughtrey Art Gallery from Oct. 27, through Nov. 22.
“The Detroit Historical Society and the College for Creative Studies have done masterful work in preserving the cultural and historical heritage of Detroit,” said Julio Suarez, chair of the Hillsdale College art department. “The exhibit does a great job at showing the everyday experiences of those who lived in the Motor City.”
From 1972 to 1984, the students of Rauhauser explored aspects of documentary photography using the people and landscape of Detroit as their subjects. Many of the photographs were exhibited at the Detroit Historical Museum, and all became part of the permanent collection. Several students featured in this exhibition went on to professional careers in photography, such as Dave Jordano and Carla Anderson.
