Hillsdale, Mich.— Hillsdale College awarded the Daugherty Award for Teaching Excellence to Chairman and Professor of History Mark Kalthoff during the College’s Spring Convocation on Thursday, April 11, 2019.

“Mark Kalthoff exemplifies the kind of steady, wise teaching that we prize at the college,” said Daniel Coupland, Dean of Faculty and Associate Professor of Education. “The hundreds of Hillsdale students who have sat in his classes over the years have been shaped by his deep understanding of his particular field and of liberal education in general.”

Kalthoff began his academic career at Hillsdale College as an undergraduate student, where he triple majored in history, biology, and mathematics. In 1984, he graduated summa cum laude as the class salutatorian. Following graduation, Kalthoff earned his master’s degree and doctorate degree in history and philosophy of science from Indiana University in 1987 and 1998, respectively.

Kalthoff returned to Hillsdale as a member of the faculty in 1989. He began his teaching career at the College as a lecturer in history before moving into assistant, associate, and full professor roles. He served as the dean of faculty from 2005 to 2009, has been chairman of the History Department since 2002, and holds the Henry Salvatori Chair in History and Traditional Values.

Throughout his time as part of the Hillsdale College faculty, Kalthoff has received many awards and honors, including being nominated for Professor of the Year four times. He is the 2014 winner of the Curtis A. Seichter Endowed History Award for Teaching and Scholarship and is a member of the History of Science Society, the Philadelphia Society, and the Conference on Faith and History, among other academic communities.
