Hillsdale College Honors Veterans at Two Weekend Events
HILLSDALE, Mich. — Hillsdale College hosted Military Appreciation Day at the Halter Center for Shooting Sports Education and on campus as part of the College’s football activities on Saturday, Nov. 6. Nearly 200 veterans and active-duty members and their families attended both events.
“We are always happy to honor those who have served, or are serving, in our military,” said Gwen Buchhop, assistant athletic director for media and community relations.
Veterans were invited to take advantage of free shooting at the Halter Center, and the football team welcomed members of the Hillsdale, Reading, and Jonesville American Legions as well as a motorcycle group called the Combat Vets Association.
Veterans tailgated at the Gridiron pavilion then participated in a pregame ceremony on the field. Legion postmasters were honorary captains at the coin toss before the game, and the Hillsdale Civil Air Patrol Composite Squadron provided a color guard for the national anthem.
On Nov. 11, Jason Gehrke, assistant history professor and Army Reserves veteran, will speak on campus in honor of Veterans Day. His talk will be titled “Remembering America: a Meditation for Veterans Day” and will be open to the public at 7 p.m. in the Fine Arts Building. Hillsdale College student veterans will also take turns guarding a “missing man” table in the cafeteria that day in honor of fallen, missing, or imprisoned military service members.
