Hillsdale College Hosts 23rd Annual Athletic Hall of Fame Induction
Alumni Bob Mallendick,’66, Jason Stomps,’10, four former softball teams inducted
HILLSDALE, Mich. — Hillsdale College congratulated new inductees to the Athletic Hall of Fame at its 23rd annual Athletic Hall of Fame Banquet in the Searle Center on March 26, 2022. This year’s inductees included alumni Bob Mallendick (’66), Jason Stomps (’10), and the 1988, 1989, 1990, and 1991 softball teams.
“Each inductee and team thought first and most fondly of the opportunity to represent Hillsdale College and all that we stand for, and they were grateful for their coaches and teammates,” said Gwendolyn Buchhop, assistant athletic director. “Loyalty, gratitude, endurance, and character are virtues that all Charger athletes are either equipped with when they arrive or infused with before they depart.”
Buchhop said that Stomps went from novice athlete to All-American, fought for his life in the intensive care unit, then was a national champion; the softball teams built their stadium with their own hands while training to become eventual conference champions; and Mallendick was the front line for the Charger Football offense at a time when there was no distinction between schools with 600 or 15,000 students.
Following a cocktail hour, Jeff Lantis, director of external relations for athletics, began the ceremony with opening remarks. Professor Emeritus Tom Conner and Director of Athletics Don Brubacher introduced and presented the Hall of Fame honorees. Other speakers included inductees themselves.
