Hillsdale College Hosts Annual Liberty and Learning Youth Conferences
The conferences were attended by nearly 100 high school students from across the county
HILLSDALE, Mich. — A group of high school students rounded out their summer by attending Hillsdale College’s annual Liberty and Learning Youth Conferences. Nearly 100 students from across the country attended one of three conferences held at Hillsdale College and its John Anthony Halter Shooting Sports Education Center.
“The Liberty and Learning Youth Conferences are always popular,” said Zach Miller, senior director of Admissions at Hillsdale College. “They give prospective students an opportunity to visit campus and experience different aspects of Hillsdale College, including a study of the Constitution and Declaration of Independence.”
Students stayed on campus for three days, attending lectures from Hillsdale professors on the Declaration of Independence and U.S. Constitution, with an emphasis on the Second Amendment. Attendees also had to opportunity to spend one day at the Halter Center, where they received instruction in archery, air rifle, and shotgun, and attended a lecture on conservation offered by Al Stewart, director of Hillsdale’s Nimrod Education Center.
“It’s a great program,” said Bart Spieth, the Halter Center’s range master. “Students get to learn about their Second Amendment rights, firearm safety, and fundamentals of the shooting sports.”
Those who attended had the opportunity to compete in an essay contest on the Constitution. Winners received a $3000 scholarship that would go towards their tuition at Hillsdale College.
