Hillsdale College Hosts Good Friday Service in Christ Chapel
HAMA leads service for college and community
HILLSDALE, Mich. — Hillsdale College hosted the Hillsdale Area Ministerial Association’s (HAMA) annual Good Friday service at noon in Christ Chapel on April 15. Hundreds from the College and greater Hillsdale community attended.
The service consisted of hymn singing, a homily, and a lesson from scripture on the Passion of Jesus.
“The College is pleased to offer the chapel for this community worship service,” said Chaplain Fr. Adam Rick, who is also a member of HAMA. “It is always exciting to share such a beautiful space with members of the community.”
Rick said that historically, HAMA has hosted the service in one of their own churches, but a couple of years ago they reached out to the College to use Christ Chapel. This was the College’s second year to host the event.
“After the great success of last year’s Good Friday service at Christ’s Chapel, HAMA was unanimous in seeking to host it there again this year,” said Rev. Lucas Miller, president of HAMA and pastor of the Somerset Congregational Church. “No other church building in the county has the same seating capacity, nor transcendent architecture. Plus, as an alumnus of the College, I love to see the college community and the Hillsdale community at large join together, especially in worship.”
Chaplain Rick said that his role in the service is small other than to be present to greet guests and that it is encouraging to see so many worshiping in Christ Chapel who may not have visited previously
The College hosts regular services of its own in Christ Chapel, often featuring the new Chapel Choir. These are open to the public. Rick says the aim is to increase the frequency of these services “to further explore the intersection of music and worship.”
