HILLSDALE, Mich. — Hillsdale College hosted a hometown lecture series at The River Center in Davenport, Iowa on Tuesday, Oct. 18. Hillsdale College Walter E. Williams Chair in Free Market Economics and Associate Professor of Economics Roger Butters gave a talk titled, “Socialism Isn’t the Solution.”

“Free markets create the information and incentives necessary to solve social problems and create wealth for the masses. Socialism destroys productive incentives and erases the information societies need to allocate goods and services,” Butters said. “The result is always shortages, poverty, and eventually tyranny. Socialism is never the solution.”

The event took place at The River Center in Davenport. Approximately 180 people attended the speech and complimentary luncheon.

“The goal, like other Hillsdale events, is to provide an opportunity to friends of the college to listen to an interesting lecture, ask questions, enjoy our hospitality, and thereby get to know us better,” said Kathleen Ruddy, senior director of associates and special projects at Hillsdale College.

Since 2011, Hillsdale College has welcomed more than 10,000 guests to Hometown Lecture programs in locations ranging from Eugene, Oregon, to Providence, Rhode Island, to Melbourne, Florida. The Hometown Lecture Series provides friends of Hillsdale College with the opportunity to learn more about Hillsdale College, which is one of the few institutions of higher learning that operates entirely free of federal or state taxpayer monies.
