HILLSDALE, Mich. — The President’s Office and Hillsdale College Creative Writing Program hosted acclaimed novelist and two-time Booker Prize finalist Chigozie Obioma for a reading of one of his novels and lecture in the Campbell Room on Nov. 7.

Obioma delivered a lecture on Mystical Realism in Fiction and read from upcoming novel, “The Road to the Country.”

“It was an immense privilege to hear a passage of Mr. Obioma’s new book,” senior Meera Baldwin said. “He is such an accomplished author and as an aspiring writer myself, I have learned so much from both his class and lecture.”

Born in Akure, Nigeria, Chigozie Obioma wrote two novels, “The Fishermen” and “An Orchestra of Minorities.” Both were shortlisted for The Booker Prize, making him one of only two novelists to be shortlisted for all their works. These books have won awards including the inaugural FT/Oppenheimer Award for Fiction, the NAACP Image Award and the LA Times Book Prize, and been nominated for many others.

In addition to his lecture and reading, Obioma also taught a class as part of Hillsdale College’s creative writing honors program. This semester, nine students participated in the three-credit course.

“Mr. Obioma is an excellent and profound writer,” said Dutton Kearney, professor of English and director of the creative writing honors program. “This was his second visit to campus. Our students and faculty are very fortunate to know and learn from him.”
