HILLSDALE, Mich. — Hillsdale College hosted a luncheon and symposium at the Renaissance Boca Raton Hotel on Jan. 26. Khalil Habib, associate professor of politics, gave a talk titled, “Origins of a Living Constitution.” Kayla Thompson, executive director of gift & estate planning, also presented a seminar.

During the program, Habib spoke on how the ideas of Jean-Jacques Rousseau and John Dewey, among others, were adopted by the Progressives to overturn the notion of natural rights and transform the U.S. Constitution into a “living” document.

“The American Progressives of the late nineteenth century introduced radically new principles of government contrary to the Declaration of Independence and the U.S. Constitution,” said Habib. “Whereas the Founders turned to the ‘laws of nature and of nature’s God’ as the source of their arguments for a system of limited government, the Progressives rejected natural rights and the separation of powers in favor of a living constitution.”

Thompson spoke on “How to Protect Assets, Generate Income, Receive a Charitable Deduction, and Establish a Legacy with Hillsdale College.” “The work of Hillsdale College could not be accomplished without the support of its many, many friends across the country,” said Thompson. “I am always in awe of the generosity demonstrated by the people who attend these and other Hillsdale events.”

Hillsdale College hosts several gift and estate planning symposiums around the country each year that aim to clarify the ways donors can maximize their philanthropic goals in support of the college’s intellectual and academic pursuits as well as give those interested the opportunity to learn more about the college.
