HILLSDALE, Mich. — Hillsdale College has awarded the 2023 Henry Salvatori Prize for Excellence in Teaching to Atlanta Classical Academy. A member school of Hillsdale College’s Barney Charter School Initiative, Atlanta Classical Academy, received the award on June 19 during the K-12 Education Office’s annual Summer Conference in Classical Education in Hillsdale, Michigan.

“Atlanta Classical Academy represents the best in American classical education because of its commitment to its mission of developing students in mind and character with an emphasis on virtue and civic responsibility,” said Assistant Provost for K-12 Education Kathleen O’Toole. “With its talented faculty and its commitment to helping that faculty develop in the art of teaching, Atlanta Classical instills a love of learning and of virtue in its students.”

Atlanta Classical Academy has been affiliated with Hillsdale College since 2014. The school currently serves more than 650 students in grades K-12.

In response to the widespread decline in American K-12 education, the late Henry Salvatori established a permanent endowment at Hillsdale College to recognize exceptional classroom teaching nationwide. The Salvatori Prize has three objectives: to focus attention on teaching, which is the core ingredient of effective education reform; to support deserving schools with funds for books, equipment, and other educational material; and to promote the principles of classical liberal arts education. Each year, a $25,000 award is made payable to the winning school’s tax exempt 501(c)(3) institution. The money may be used for books, equipment, and other education material.

About K-12 Education: An American Classical Education
Hillsdale College’s K-12 Education Office supports school administrators, teachers, and parents with the educational and organizational resources they need to educate the nation’s youth in the American and classical tradition. The Barney Charter School Initiative, part of Hillsdale College’s K-12 efforts, promotes the founding of classical charter schools and excellence in their teaching and operations so that public-school students may be educated in the liberal arts and sciences and receive instruction in the principles of moral character and civic virtue. The initiative currently has 23 member schools across 12 states. The Barney Charter School Initiative is made possible through leadership support from the Barney Family Foundation and gifts from many other friends of Hillsdale College.
