HILLSDALE, Mich. — The Hillsdale College K-12 Education Office will partner with the Institute for Excellence in Writing to develop a complete structure and style curriculum for grades 3-8. The curriculum will focus on teaching students the principles of effective composition, with an emphasis on brevity, clarity, and creativity.

“We are excited to partner with the Institute for Excellence in Writing to provide the students at Hillsdale-affiliated schools with a comprehensive writing curriculum that is both rigorous and engaging,” said Kathleen O’Toole, assistant provost for K-12 education at Hillsdale College. Over the next few years, the Institute for Excellence in Writing will develop a series of books with lessons corresponding with the K-12 Program Guide, Hillsdale’s scope and sequence for K-12 schools. Each level will include a student book and a teacher’s manual. The first resource in the series, a third-grade curriculum, will be released during the summer of 2023. Additional grade levels will be released each following summer. A Hillsdale representative will become an authorized IEW instructor, and as the program rolls out, the K-12 Education Office will host regular training calls for teachers in affiliated schools.

“Institute for Excellence in Writing is thrilled to collaborate with Hillsdale College to develop a new and exciting writing curriculum for students in grades 3-8 based on content in Hillsdale College’s K-12 Scope and Sequence,” said Julie Walker, chief marketing officer at the Institute for Excellence in Writing. The curriculum will be available through the Institute for Excellence in Writing to schools, homeschooling families, and anyone interested in learning to write or teach.
