Hillsdale College Launches Free Online Course: “Winston Churchill and Statesmanship”

September 24, 2015 – Hillsdale, MI

Hillsdale College today opened registration for a new, free, not-for-credit, online course, “Winston Churchill and Statesmanship,” which begins on Oct. 5. The six-week course, taught by Hillsdale College President Larry P. Arnn, examines the life, lessons and legacy of Sir Winston Churchill. Register online at online.hillsdale.edu.

Winston S. Churchill was the greatest statesman of the 20th century, and one of the greatest in all of history. From a young age, Churchill understood the unique dangers of modern warfare, and he worked to respond to them. Though best known for his leadership during World War II, he was also a great defender of constitutionalism. A close study of Churchill’s words and deeds offers timeless lessons about the virtues, especially prudence, required for great statesmanship.

“Churchill’s life and career may be the best example modern historians have of what it means to be a statesman, providing timeless lessons of justice and injustice, of life and death, and how to lead with strength and conviction,” said Dr. Arnn.

The course consists of six 30-40 minute sessions, which are released every Monday and are available on-demand once published:

  • Week 1 – “Why Study Churchill?”
  • Week 2 – “The Problem of Modern War”
  • Week 3 – “A Strategy for Modern War”
  • Week 4 – “The Problem of Modern Politics”
  • Week 5 – “Churchill’s Plan for Freedom”
  • Week 6 – “What Churchill Teaches Us About Our Time”

Hillsdale College offers a catalog of free online courses taught by its faculty in subjects ranging from the Constitution, education, great books, and economics. More than 830,000 students have generated more than 1.2 million course enrollments since the program launched in fall 2011.
