HILLSDALE, Mich. — Hillsdale College’s Music Department hosted the 2023 annual Student Concerto/Aria Competition on Feb. 5. Students participating in the competition performed solo pieces for a panel of judges in Markel Auditorium, and four students were selected to perform with the Hillsdale College Symphony Orchestra.

“The Student Concerto/Aria Competition provides students with an excellent opportunity, not only to perform, but also to hone their skills as soloists,” said James Holleman, professor of music and director of the college’s orchestra and two of its choirs. “Students are tested in their ability to memorize material, perform, and engage the audience.”

Sixteen instrumentalists and nine vocalists participated in the competition and performed solo pieces for a panel of guest judges from other colleges and universities. The selected winners were violist Bank Bodor (‘24) and soprano Brianna Lambrecht (‘23), who will perform with the Hillsdale College Symphony Orchestra on May 12, and harpist Magdalena Shaltanis (‘24) and saxophonist Lydia Magyar (‘24), who will perform with the orchestra during a concert in fall 2023. Lambrecht, a student of Artist-Teacher of Music Emily Douglass, was also selected to perform with the orchestra during the 2022 Student Concerto/Aria Competition. Bodor is a student of Professor of Music Melissa Knecht, Shaltanis is a student of Adjunct Instructor of Music Amy Ley, and Magyar is a student of Adjunct Instructor of Music Jonathon Gewirtz.
