Hillsdale College Music Department Welcomes Jazz Trio
HILLSDALE, Mich. — On November 17, the Hillsdale College music department showcased jazz trio TrioGram at Conrad Recital Hall. The ensemble performed tracks from their eponymous album, with a particular emphasis on the evolution of “next generation” modern jazz.
TrioGram, a jazz piano group tailored for the contemporary age, blends a sense of modernity with the rich tapestry of jazz across different eras. Comprising bassist Will Lyle, pianist Bijan Taghavi, and drummer Kofi Shepsu, the trio delivered a captivating performance. Notably, Taghavi is a member of the Hillsdale College music department, where he imparts his expertise in jazz piano to aspiring musicians.
Director of jazz ensembles, Chris McCourry, expressed enthusiasm about hosting TrioGram on campus, highlighting the added significance of having a band member who also serves as a college instructor. McCourry noted, “Our students benefit not only from learning about jazz but also from instructors who actively contribute to the jazz scene professionally.”
TrioGram’s repertoire included renditions of “Crossfire/It Always Happens Medley,” “How Deep is the Ocean,” and “Goodbye Forever,” among other selections. Prior to the concert, the trio conducted a masterclass for students, providing valuable insights into their craft.
