Hillsdale College Offers Fourth Year of Senior Capstone Class

HILLSDALE, Mich. — The Hillsdale College class of 2023 began the school year with the senior capstone course. The course is now in its fourth year as a part of Hillsdale’s rigorous core curriculum, providing seniors with an overview of their time at the College and encouraging them to carry what they have learned with them for the rest of their lives.
Hillsdale College President Dr. Larry P. Arnn teaches the first portion of the course, which explores the pursuit of truth and the development of moral character that defines the unique partnership between students, faculty, and staff at Hillsdale College. Seniors are reminded of the importance of what they have learned as they approach graduation.
“A lot of things have come into your head in these four years, and it’s good to make an effort to remember them and bring order to them as you leave,” Dr. Arnn said. “You’ve undertaken a lifetime task. It’s made you different from everybody else because there is nobody who does quite what we do anymore.”
During the second portion of the course, students learn from professors in their major area of study about relating that major to the liberal arts and living well.
“The capstone course’s departmental section allows Hillsdale students to discover the relationship between different areas of studies and living a good life,” said Hillsdale College Provost Christopher VanOrman. “Seniors learn that every academic discipline can aid them in their journey to understanding human nature and the natural world.”
The capstone course is offered each semester to members of the senior class and is a requirement for graduation. The recently developed Freshman Foundation lecture series (required for all first-year students) acts as a complement to the capstone.
