HILLSDALE, Mich. —  During the last three years, Hillsdale College online course students have completed 242,393 online courses and submitted 5,973,818 quizzes. The free online courses mirror Hillsdale’s curriculum, covering core subject areas like economics, history, literature, philosophy, politics, and religion.

“The college was founded with the mission to provide an education in the liberal arts to ‘all who wish to learn,’” said Kyle Murnen, director of online learning. “We began our efforts with online courses pursuant to that mission.”

Hillsdale College launched its free, not-for-credit online courses program in 2011. The college has since produced more than 30 courses, which include lectures from Hillsdale College faculty members and are supported by readings, supplementary videos, study guides, and discussion boards. Students can complete a final quiz to receive a personalized certificate of completion.

“It is encouraging to see so many people who are taking advantage of these free online courses and are eager to learn more about the greatest ideas and texts of western civilization,” said Murnen. “In the past few years, more than 22,000 people have completed three or more courses. We look forward to continued success in the future.”

The college currently offers courses on a wide range of topics, such as “Civil Rights in American History,” “C.S. Lewis on Christianity,” “Constitution 101: The Meaning and History of the Constitution,” and “Mathematics and Logic: From Euclid to Geometry.” A full listing of offerings can be found here

The college releases new offerings each year. “The American Left: From Liberalism to Despotism,” is currently under production and is scheduled for release on January 31. It is taught by politics professor Kevin Slack and based on his forthcoming book, “War on the American Republic: How Liberalism Became Despotism,” which will be published on March 21 and can be preordered here.

Other upcoming courses will discuss chemistry, American foreign policy, ancient Christianity, dystopian literature, and Charles Dickens.
