Hillsdale College Presents Sacred Concert and Christmas Service

HILLSDALE, Mich. — The Hillsdale College chapel choir presented its annual Lessons and Carols Christmas service and Sacred Concert on Dec. 4 in Christ Chapel. The event included Christmas carols and Scripture readings and was open to all.

“This service is such a beautiful time of celebrating the Christmas season and rejoicing in the coming of Christ,” said Rev. Adam Rick, Hillsdale College chaplain. In addition to anthems sung by the Chapel Choir, the service featured carols such as “Hark the Herald Angels Sing” and “O Little Town of Bethlehem” sung by the congregation. Rick and members of the college community read lessons of Scripture that told the nativity story. The service order for Lessons and Carols was developed in late 19th-century England. It has since become popular in churches around the world, owing in large measure to King’s College Cambridge’s live broadcast of their service every Christmas Eve since 1928.

“It is a thrill for the Chapel Choir to bring this tradition of carols and sacred music to both the College and the wider community in celebration of Christ’s birth,” said Timothy McDonnell, associate professor of music and director of sacred music at Hillsdale College. “We hope to make this a cherished event year after year for our colleagues and neighbors.”
