Hillsdale College Professor’s Research Featured at International Climate Change Conference
Dr. Charles Steele contributes to independent research panel on fossil fuels
Hillsdale, Mich. – On December 4, the Nongovernmental International Panel on Climate Change (NIPCC) presented the research of Dr. Charles N. Steele and other leading experts on climate change at its conference in Katowice, Poland. Held at the same time and in the same city as the U.N.’s Framework Convention on Climate Change, the conference presented an alternative perspective of the impact of both natural and human forces on the environment.
“If recent experience has shown us anything, it has shown us that the climate change research that gets publicity isn’t particularly reliable,” said Steele, the Herman and Suzanne Dettwiler chair in economics at Hillsdale College. “Too often, shoddy research practices and political fear-mongering conceal the real reasons for proposed climate change policies. I am honored to be able to work alongside these experts on this report and am glad that our work will be shared on an international platform.”
The fifth in a series titled Climate Change Reconsidered, the report assesses the costs and benefits of fossil fuels. It finds that the risks of using fossil fuels have been grossly exaggerated and the benefits might even be net positive, and suggests that policymakers should reconsider regulations designed to reduce greenhouse gas emissions.
The NIPCC unites experts from around the globe to consider the evidence on climate change from an independent, non-governmental perspective. As such, it provides an important evaluation of the research and conclusions produced by the U.N.’s Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change.
