Hillsdale College Remembers Trustee Emeritus Frank Shakespeare

HILLSDALE, Mich. — Hillsdale College is saddened by the passing of a long-time friend and supporter of the college Amb. Frank Shakespeare. Shakespeare, who served on the Hillsdale College Board of Trustees for 37 years, died on December 14, 2022, at 97 years old. 

“Frank Shakespeare was a profound leader who was dedicated to serving his country and promoting freedom,” said Rich Péwé, chief administrative officer of Hillsdale College. “We are grateful for his years of service to the college, and we offer our deepest condolences to his family.”  

Shakespeare joined the Hillsdale College Board of Trustees in 1976. During his tenure, he served on the outreach committee. In addition to his years of service on the Board, Shakespeare gave generously to Hillsdale College, including supporting the completion of the official biography of Winston Churchill. He worked on Richard Nixon’s 1968 presidential campaign developing media strategies and led the United States Information Agency under Nixon. He later served as the chairman of the board for International Broadcasting and a U.S. ambassador to Portugal and the Holy See under President Ronald Reagan.
