Hillsdale College Senior Receives Barry Foundation Scholarship
Senior Nick West will pursue master’s degree in applied mathematics at Oxford
HILLSDALE, Mich. — Hillsdale College Senior Nick West became the first Hillsdale student to win the Barry Foundation Scholarship and enroll at the University of Oxford with the scholarship, which grants full funding for its recipients to earn graduate degrees at Oxford. After majoring in mathematics and physics at Hillsdale College, West said he plans to pursue two master’s degrees, one in applied mathematics.
“It’s incredible to be able to go to Oxford, completely funded,” West said.
One of the professors who recommended West for the scholarship, Associate Professor of Mathematics David Gaebler, said West’s admittance to Oxford is representative of his success at Hillsdale College.
“Nick has both the classroom skills and research skills necessary for success,” Gaebler said. “He’s a somewhat legendary tutor and teaching assistant, and is one of the top mathematics majors that has graduated from this school.”
West applied by submitting an application to Hillsdale College’s Barry Foundation Scholarship committee, which then recommended his application to Hillsdale College President Dr. Larry P. Arnn. From there, Dr. Arnn submitted West’s application to the Barry Foundation, which chose him for the scholarship. After receiving the scholarship, West applied and was accepted to Oxford.
“Lightning struck twice,” said Kenneth Calvert, director of the Oxford Program and professor of history.
