Hillsdale College Student Newspaper Receives 11 Awards from Michigan Press Association

HILLSDALE, Mich. — Hillsdale College’s student-run newspaper, The Collegian, won 11 individual awards from the Michigan Press Association for its publications during the 2022-2023 academic year.

“We are proud of our students,” said John Miller, director of the Dow Journalism Program. “They pour their energy into the newsroom, investing time in research, crafting, and perfecting their pieces. Journalism isn’t a major at Hillsdale. That means that these students are pursuing areas of real knowledge, including literature, history, philosophy, sciences, and mathematics. Coupled with their ability to produce first-rate articles, their education is what sets them apart.”

The individual awards are as follows:

  • Best News, Only Photo (First Place) – Jack Cote (’25), “Dean of Men in Battle”
  • Feature Photo (First Place) – Jack Cote (’25), “Boy with Easter Bunny Masthead”
  • Best Writer (Second Place) – Maggie Hroncich (’23)
  • Best Writer (Third Place) – Elizabeth Troutman (’24)
  • Feature Story (Second Place) – Maggie Hroncich (’23), “Mystery Solved: Professor Confirms Arb Fossil Legend”
  • Feature Story (Third Place) – Carly Moran (’25), “Meet the Localvores of Hillsdale County”
  • Feature Story (Honorable Mention) – Josh Newhook (’23), “Allen Couple Celebrates 80 Years of Marriage”
  • Front Page Design (First Place) – Maddy Welsh (’24), “April 13, 2023”
  • Front Page Design (Second Place) – Elizabeth Troutman (’24), “November 10, 2022”

The Collegian is Hillsdale College’s weekly student newspaper. The paper delivers local, campus, and national news that is written, photographed, and videoed by Hillsdale students. The Collegian is the oldest college newspaper in Michigan. Collegian writers have gone on to write for outlets such as The Wall Street Journal, Fox News, ESPN, Politico, National Review, The Washington Times, The Washington Examiner, The Washington Free Beacon, and The Hill.
