Hillsdale College Students Earn Leading Latin Translation Contest Scores
Sophomore Mary Margaret Ryland, sophomore Natasha de Virgilio, senior Emma Clifton, and senior Emma Frank win awards for Latin Translation
Hillsdale, Mich. – Hillsdale College congratulates students Mary Margaret Ryland, Natasha de Virgilio, Emma Clifton and Emma Frank on their recognition as winners in the 2018 Classical Association of the Middle West and South (CAMWS) Latin Translation Contest.
“Hillsdale College is committed to offering students the highest quality education possible, and it’s exciting to see them succeeding as they put that education to the test,” said Laury Ward, assistant professor of classics and faculty advisor for Eta Sigma Phi. “We’re proud of the dedication from our students and faculty to achieve this level of excellence in their studies.”
Sophomores Ryland and de Virgilio, both of whom have not yet declared majors, competed in the Intermediate Latin Exam. They both earned the Book Award, scoring in the top 10 percent of completed exams.
Clifton, a senior studying applied mathematics, and Frank, a senior majoring in classical studies, competed in the Advanced Latin Exam. Clifton earned the Book Award, scoring in the top 10 percent, and Frank earned the Certificate of Commendation, scoring in the top 25 percent.
Each year, the CAMWS welcomes Latin prose and poetry translation submissions from students at colleges and universities in the South and Midwest. Thirty-three schools from 18 states and one Canadian province competed in the 2018 CAMWS contest, with a total of 407 entrants. Submissions are graded by a committee of faculty members from secondary and post-secondary institutions throughout the region, and winners receive cash prizes, book awards and certificates of commendation.
