Hillsdale College Welcomes New Board Trustee

HILLSDALE, Mich. — Hillsdale College announces the addition of a new member to its Board of Trustees: Thomas C. Shafer.

“The Hillsdale College Board of Trustees has been a steadfast source of guidance and wisdom for the College through its storied history,” said Rich Péwé, vice president for administration and secretary to the Board. “Mr. Shafer will bring new insights to the board and help the College continue to pursue its original purposes of faith, freedom, high learning and high character.” Thomas C. Shafer is the retired CEO of TCF National Bank.

Prior to the sale of TCF to Huntington National Bank, Shafer was an executive officer at Huntington Bank, helping it become a top-ten regional bank. Shafer previously served as CEO and president of Chemical Bank and vice chairman and director of Chemical Financial Corporation. Earlier in his career, Shafer held the position of president of Talmer Bank and vice chairman of Talmer Bancorp, Inc. as well as CEO, president, and director of First Place Bank. Shafer served Citizens Republic Bancorp for 16 years in positions including executive vice president of regional banking, executive vice president of commercial banking, and chief credit officer.

Shafer earned his bachelor’s degree from Hillsdale College, majoring in economics and business administration along with political economy. He is also a graduate of the University of Wisconsin Graduate School of Banking. Currently, Shafer serves on the Board of Directors for the Detroit Regional Chamber, Michigan Bankers Association, and is the past chairman of Detroit Public Television.
