Washington, D.C. – Hillsdale College welcomes the George Washington Fellowship Program Class of 2022. Based at Hillsdale’s campus in Washington, D.C., the program is designed to prepare undergraduate students for public service through a rigorous study of history, politics, and statesmanship.

“The George Washington Fellowship Program prepares outstanding students for a career in the public square by focusing their studies on American founding principles and statesmen who uphold those principles,” said Matthew Spalding, Vice President of Washington Operations and Dean of the Van Andel Graduate School of Government. “Through research, writing, discussions, and especially an internship semester in the nation’s capital, students will expand their understanding not only of the principles but also the practice of free government.”

Established in 2008, the George Washington Fellowship Program is a highly competitive scholarship program for Hillsdale College undergraduate students of any major. Its four main components are curriculum requirements focusing on American political thought and constitutional history, regular discussions with guests and visiting scholars, ongoing research and writing projects, and one semester studying in Washington, D.C. as part of the Washington-Hillsdale Internship Program (WHIP).

The Fellowship includes a generous scholarship of $5,000 per semester beginning in the spring of the fellow’s sophomore year. Awards are made by a faculty selection committee based on academic excellence, extracurricular activities that reflect leadership qualities, and keen interest in public affairs and public service.
