HILLSDALE, Mich. — The Hillsdale College chapter of Young Americans for Freedom held a memorial on September 11 to honor those lost in the 9/11 attacks. This project is part of YAF’s nationwide 9/11: Never Forget Project.

It is imperative that every American reflect on the significance of that tragedy and what it means for our country today,” said Zachary Bauder, president of Hillsdale’s YAF chapter. “This anniversary, we commit ourselves foremost to the task of remembering the dead. We will make sure of the victims that, as Virgil writes in the ‘Aeneid,’ and as is displayed in the National September 11 Memorial Museum in New York City, ‘no day shall erase you from the memory of time.’”

Hillsdale YAF members invited students, faculty, and staff to contribute to the memorial project by placing 2,977 small American flags in the ground on Hillsdale’s campus around the Civil War Memorial statue. The flags memorialize the 2,977 lives lost on 9/11.

“Most of our students, being born in or after 2001, have no direct memory of the events of September 11. Yet they carry on this tradition because they recognize how we Americans are bound together by bonds of common ideals and history,” said Adam Carrington, associate professor of politics and faculty advisor to Hillsdale’s YAF chapter. “It is this kind of enlightened patriotism we seek to inculcate and are proud to see exhibited in Hillsdale College students.”

Young Americans for Freedom is a project of Young America’s Foundation. YAF chapter members advocate the ideas of limited government, individual freedom, free enterprise, traditional principles, and a strong national defense through educational activities, conferences, and campus leadership.
