Hillsdale College’s D.G. Hart Named Foreign Policy Research Institute Fellow

History scholar awarded Novakovic Fellowship to study history of religion and society

Hillsdale, Mich. – Hillsdale College congratulates distinguished associate professor of history D.G. Hart on being named the Novakovic Fellow at the Foreign Policy Research Institute’s Center for the Study of America and the West.

“Dr. Hart has been doing fantastic work as a scholar and educator here at Hillsdale for years, and we’re excited to see his scholarship recognized with this new fellowship,” said Mark Kalthoff, Henry Salvatori chair in history and professor and chairman of history. “The history department congratulates him on this recognition of his academic work.”

Hart’s work focuses on the intersection of religion and society throughout history. He has authored many books on the subject, including some of his most recent works: Damning Words: The Life and Religious Times of H.L. Mencken, Calvinism: A History and From Billy Graham to Sarah Palin: Evangelicals and the Betrayal of American Conservatism. His work has also been published in The Wall Street Journal, The Chronicle of Higher Education and The Federalist. His current projects include a book on the post-World War II connections between Roman Catholics and the idea of American exceptionalism for Cornell University Press, as well as a spiritual biography of Benjamin Franklin for Oxford University Press.

Hart earned his undergraduate degree from Temple University, a Master of Arts in religion degree in church history from Westminster Seminary, a Master of Theological Studies degree in U.S. religious history from Harvard University and Master’s and Doctorate degrees in U.S. history from Johns Hopkins University.

The Foreign Policy Research Institute is a think tank focused on informing America’s foreign policy and national security initiatives through scholarly work in history, geography and culture. As part of the Institute’s Center for the Study of America and the West, Hart will further the Center’s exploration of the core ideas of American Identity and Western Civilization.
