Hillsdale College’s Fraternities and Sororities Among the Best in the Nation for Greek Life

October 13, 2015 – Hillsdale, MI

Hillsdale College has been named one of the 50 best colleges in the nation for Greek life, according to Best College Reviews, which listed Hillsdale at 29, citing the College’s sororities and fraternities as “dedicated to making Hillsdale a better place.”

“At Hillsdale College, Greek life complements the scholarly life—rigorous academics, leadership, and character,” said Aaron Petersen, dean of men and adviser to the College’s Interfraternity Council, the governing body of all campus fraternities. “Fraternities and sororities reinforce the College’s mission to develop the minds and hearts of students here on campus, and they take that duty seriously.”

Best College Reviews looked at participation rates and current satisfaction with the Greek life experience, among other criteria. Thirty percent of Hillsdale College students are members of Greek organizations.

Hillsdale College has four fraternities (Alpha Tau Omega, Delta Sigma Phi, Delta Tau Delta, Sigma Chi) and three sororities (Chi Omega, Kappa Kappa Gamma, Pi Beta Phi) with longstanding legacies on campus. Hillsdale’s first fraternity, Delta Tau Delta, was chartered in 1867. Its first sorority, Kappa Kappa Gamma, was chartered in 1881.

In the 2014-2015 school year, Hillsdale’s fraternities and sororities performed more than 8,600 hours of community service. Many earned recognition for their outstanding academic and community achievements.

The Sigma Chi fraternity had the top overall academic performance of any fraternity at Hillsdale College. In spring 2015, the Alpha Tau Omega fraternity claimed both the Hillsdale College Greek Week trophy and the Scholarship Cup, and its third consecutive national True Merit Award. Delta Sigma Phi was honored at the national fraternity’s biannual convention as the longest continuously operating chapter, which has been active for more than 100 years. The Delta Tau Delta fraternity had the highest overall GPA in the last 5 years.

Hillsdale’s Chi Omega sorority was recognized as a “Chapter of Excellence.” The Kappa Kappa Gama Hillsdale chapter was recognized as a 2014 Heritage Award winner. The Pi Beta Phi sorority at Hillsdale College earned national awards in “Excellence in Appreciating Fraternity Values” and “Excellence in Academic Mentoring.” You can view a complete list of Hillsdale College’s 2015 rankings and recognitions by visiting www.hillsdale.edu/admissions/2015-rankings.
