Hillsdale College’s Julio Suarez Receives Emily Daugherty Award for Teaching Excellence
HILLSDALE, Mich. — The 2022 Emily Daugherty Award for Teaching Excellence was presented to Julio Suarez, assistant professor of art, at Hillsdale College’s Fall Convocation on Nov. 10. “Julio Suarez is very deserving of this honor,” said Hillsdale College Provost Christopher VanOrman. “He is a brilliant artist, an inspiring professor, and a man who deeply cares about this College’s mission and students.”
Suarez has been a professor at Hillsdale since 2017 and teaches drawing, oil painting, portraiture, watercolor, and art history courses. He earned his master of fine arts from Indiana University, where he taught before he joined the Hillsdale College faculty. “It is an honor to receive this award and a true privilege to teach art at Hillsdale College,” Suarez said. “My students’ dedication and delight in learning make it a joy to teach here.”
This annual award is named in honor of Emily Daugherty, who taught in elementary and secondary schools and personified the finest traditions of the teaching profession. Daugherty devoted her life to transmitting knowledge, wisdom, and virtue to her students.
