Hillsdale College’s Keith Otterbein Named AFCA Coach of the Year
Chargers football coach recognized in national football coaching award series
Hillsdale, Mich. – Hillsdale College congratulates Chargers head football coach Keith Otterbein on being named the 2018 Division II, Region 3 Coach of the Year by the American Football Coaches Association (AFCA).
“We have been privileged to witness coach Otterbein’s dedication to the mission and goals of Hillsdale College and our student-athletes over his 17 seasons as our head football coach,” said Don Brubacher, director of athletics. “This AFCA recognition as one of the nation’s top coaches is a testament to his work, and we are proud to see him honored in this way.”
Otterbein completed his 17th season as coach of the Chargers football team in 2018. That season, he led the team to a National Collegiate Athletic Association (NCAA) Division II Championship tournament bid, where the Chargers secured the second NCAA playoff win in the program’s history against Kutztown University. The Chargers finished the 2018 season with a 10-3 record and the Great Midwest Athletic Conference championship title.
Each year, the AFCA honors 25 outstanding head coaches of programs in NCAA Divisions I, II, and III. The honorees are chosen across five regions of each division, and both regional and national winners were honored at the 2019 AFCA Convention.
