Hillsdale College’s Stephen Naumann Receives Emily Daugherty Award for Teaching Excellence
German professor awarded prestigious faculty honor at Fall Convocation
Hillsdale, Mich.— Hillsdale College is proud to congratulate assistant professor of German Stephen Naumann on receiving the Emily Daugherty Award for Teaching Excellence at the College’s Fall Convocation on Thursday, November 14.
Naumann began his academic career teaching German at Saint Croix High School in St. Paul, Minnesota, after graduating from Martin Luther College in 2001. He continued his education at Western Michigan University, where he graduated Summa Cum Laude with a bachelor’s degree in tourism and travel and German. Naumann went on to Michigan State University where he received his master’s and doctorate in German studies.
Naumann previously taught German at Michigan State University, Transylvania University in Lexington, Kentucky, and Middleburg College in Middlebury, Vermont. He began teaching at Hillsdale College in 2011 as a visiting assistant professor and then became an assistant professor in 2015. Throughout his time at Hillsdale, Naumann has taught German and a variety of Honors seminars, including an “Introduction to Polish Language and Culture,” and “The Liberal Arts Tradition.”
Throughout his academic experience, Naumann’s work has received prestigious research grants, including the Kosciuszko Foundation’s Graduate Studies and Research in Poland Scholarship and the Fulbright-Hays Doctoral Dissertation Research Abroad grant to fund his dissertation research in Poland and Germany. He also received the Research Enhancement Award from Michigan State University; the Presidential Scholar award from Western Michigan University, which honors the top scholar in the Department of Foreign Languages; and the Outstanding Senior Among Tourism and Travel Majors award from Western Michigan University’s Department of Geography.
Named for elementary and secondary school teacher Emily Daugherty, the Emily Daugherty Award for Teaching Excellence honors those who have exemplified her commitment to growing knowledge, wisdom and virtue in students. The honor has been awarded to 23 other Hillsdale professors. Hallmarks of teaching excellence include:
