Hillsdale County Emergency Management and Hillsdale College Security Teams Co-Host Emergency Response Training
HILLSDALE, Mich. — Hillsdale College Security and Emergency Management and Hillsdale County Emergency Management co-hosted an emergency response training course titled, “Campus Active Shooter Integrated Response” on Dec. 12 and 13.
“It is our duty to be as prepared as we can to handle an emergency, whether it be on campus or in the local community,” said Joe Kellam, associate director of security and emergency management at Hillsdale College. “Emergency response training like this is helpful to ensure that all teams are working together should a situation of this nature arise.”
Those attending the course included members of the Hillsdale College security team; city, county and state law enforcement officers; emergency dispatchers; firefighters; EMTs; and Emergency department nurses from Hillsdale Hospital. The purpose of the course was to train participants to recognize the best possible responses to active threats in their communities.
“This training helped us work with other first responders in developing response plans and working through those plans in exercises,” said Kellam. “We stand ready to do our best to help keep our community safe.”
The “Campus Active Shooter Integrated Response” course is a national standard created by the National Center for Biomedical Research and Training and the Department of Homeland Security. Instructors from Louisiana State University taught this course.
