Students write letters to Hillsdale Hospital employees

HILLSDALE, MICH. — The Hospital Volunteering Great Opportunities for Assistance and Leadership (GOAL) Program hosted a Healthcare Letter Writing Event the week of March 21 during lunch hours in the Grewcock Student Union. From 11 a.m. to 1 p.m., students wrote letters thanking healthcare workers for their service to the community. Letters will be delivered to staff at Hillsdale Hospital.

“Hillsdale’s Hospital Volunteering GOAL Program has two primary purposes,” said program leader McKenna Good (’23): “to have student volunteers provide the Hillsdale Hospital staff with much-needed help; and to show healthcare workers how much our community appreciates them.”

During the 2021-2022 academic year, Hospital Volunteering has hosted healthcare appreciation events including the delivery of Checker Records coffee to the hospital cafeteria, delivering Halloween and Easter candy buckets to hospital departments, and writing thank-you letters for Thanksgiving to hospital staff.

“The program had been dormant for about two years,” said Good. “However, last semester I was able to place seven student volunteers in hospital departments, despite strict COVID restrictions.”

This semester, 12 students have been able to volunteer at the hospital through the program.

As the work of the program picks back up, Good and the hospital volunteers are eager to keep reminding healthcare workers of how important they are to the Hillsdale College community.
