Michael Ward Accepts Distinguished Fellowship, Leads C.S. Lewis Seminar
HILLSDALE, Mich. — Hillsdale College welcomes noted theologian and C.S. Lewis scholar Michael Ward as a Distinguished Fellow of the college.
“We’re thrilled that Dr. Ward is joining us,” said Christopher VanOrman, Hillsdale College provost. “This project has been in the works for some time but was delayed by COVID-19. It’s good to see it moving forward now.”
As part of this role, he will visit campus once a year for the next several years, presenting a seminar and delivering a public lecture. This year, Ward presented a seminar on the works of C.S. Lewis, lecturing between March 21-25. He discussed selections from “That Hideous Strength,” “The Discarded Image,” and books within the Narnia series with a small group of students.
Upperclassmen participating in the seminar expressed excitement at being able to learn from Ward prior to graduation. Kathleen Branigan said, “Father Ward elegantly presents in practice what he discusses in theory: namely, shifting between contemplation and experience.”
As part of his Fellowship, Dr. Ward also delivered a Drummond Lecture in Christ Chapel on March 24. This lecture was entitled “To See or Not To See: C.S. Lewis and the Objectivity of Value,” and included a discussion on the nature of perception, cynicism, and intellectual humility.

Dr. Michael Ward is the author of “Planet Narnia: The Seven Heavens in the Imagination of C.S. Lewis” and co-editor of “The Cambridge Companion to C.S. Lewis.” Ward is also a professor of apologetics and director of the C.S. Lewis Centre at Houston Baptist University.
