HILLSDALE, Mich. — Mike Pence, 48th vice president of the United States, presented the second Drummond Lecture of the 2022-2023 academic year in Hillsdale College’s Christ Chapel on March 1. His lecture was titled “The Role of Faith in Public Life.”

“The former vice president is a man of deep faith and principle,” said David Whalen, associate vice president of curriculum and professor of English. “We are honored to have him as a part of our Drummond Lecture Series.”

During his speech, Pence discussed the important role of faith in all aspects of life including its critical role in public affairs. “America needs the rising generation of leaders, not only to be smart but wise and to understand that wisdom comes from God,” said Pence.

Pence urged the audience to have faith that better times for our nation lie ahead. “I came today to Christ Chapel simply to tell all of you that, even when it doesn’t look like it, be confident that God is still working in your life and in mine and in the life of this nation,” he said.

Pence’s lecture was followed by a reception and dinner for guests in the Hillsdale College Searle Center with remarks from Wilfred M. McClay, the Victor Davis Hanson Chair in classical history and western civilization. The Drummond Lecture Series in Christ Chapel presents faculty, staff, and students with lectures on faith, learning, and related issues of the day. Previous speakers include former Secretary of Education Betsy DeVos, Christian psychiatrist and founder of OptimalWork Kevin Majeres, C. S. Lewis scholar Michael Ward, and Woodson Center President Robert Woodson.
