Luke Bessmer, a junior from Omaha, Nebraska, is one of the most active bio-chemistry majors at Hillsdale College. Luke plays a major role in Career Services as a Student Affairs Mentor (SAM), Admissions as a Student Ambassador, the chemistry department as a teacher aide, the GOAL program as a volunteer, and the Sigma Chi Fraternity as scholarship chair.

Inspired by his Student Ambassador when he was a prospective student, Luke Bessmer chose Hillsdale after the amazing experience he had while visiting and after sitting in on an organic chemistry class.

“I loved the accessibility to professors and the student-professor relationships, especially because of the immense dedication to the students—both inside and outside of the classroom.”

In regards specifically to the biology and chemistry departments, Luke finds that professors go way beyond teaching science, but they also give life advice, even taking the time to discuss philosophy and religion.

Hillsdale has helped Luke in his dream of becoming a dentist, as well as in becoming a driven, thoughtful, and hard-working individual.

“Liberal arts in general isn’t just job training, it teaches you first and foremost how to live as a human being.”

Luke is applying to University of Nebraska-Lincoln’s school of dentistry, where he has connected with the head of admissions over his love for Hillsdale. “As soon as I said I was from Hillsdale College, we had an immediate connection.”

Luke Bessmer and other Student Affairs Mentors can be found in the Career Services office and are available during the week to help students with resumes, cover letters, job interviewing skills, and finding internships and campus jobs.
