Chi Omega: Volley-for-a-Wish

Written by Christina Dressel

The Hillsdale College chapter of Chi Omega hosted its third philanthropic event of the semester, a volleyball tournament to raise funds for its national philanthropy, the Make-A-Wish Foundation, on Sunday April 23, 2014. The annual event raised over 600 dollars while still offering prizes to winning teams.

The volleyball tournament, entitled Volley-for-a-Wish, featured eleven teams that were composed of members from each Greek house on campus as well as independent players. Chi Omega rewarded winning teams with gift cards donated by local businesses, including Saucy Dog’s Barbeque,  Olivia’s Chop House, Buffalo Wild Wings, and Pub n’ Grub.

“With the generous involvement of Hillsdale businesses, as well as efficient financial planning, we were able to achieve great results,” said Chi Omega philanthropy chair Sheridan Markatos.

Although there are no more Chi Omega fund-raising events planned for the remainder of the semester, Sheridan is coordinating a 5k walk with the National Eating Disorders Association (NEDA) that will take place in the fall. Chi Omega typically hosts two or three philanthropic events per semester, showing its dedication to community service, which is one of the sorority’s six purposes.

A freshman at Hillsdale, Christina Dressel is currently pursuing a Politics and Spanish double major. She hopes to study abroad in Spain and eventually work in marketing or business. Christina is also a new member of the Chi Omega sorority and participates in both club and intramural volleyball.
