Dorm Moms

A Hillsdale Mother’s Day

The dorm moms here at Hillsdale are some of the most beautiful souls we’ve known in our time on campus. They’ve been there when we’re hurting, when we’re joyful, and they’re there to tell us to get our lives together and pull us up by our bootstraps. Today, we’d like to thank them for their dedication, love, and constant encouragement. They are some of the best examples of leadership on Hillsdale’s campus.

We asked them to share a favorite memory or their favorite part of their job as dorm mom. Here are their answers:

“A few years ago the grandmother of one of my residents passed away rather unexpectedly. It was very sad, of course, for my young lady because she felt she had not been able to say “goodbye.”  We sat and talked and cried together for a while.  When it was time for bed that night, her roommate came to me and asked if I could come and tuck them in.  It was very special to be able to sit with them and pray for them and tuck them into bed just like I had done with my own children.

The day-to-day role of the house director is pretty straightforward but it is in the special moments that we see the important impact we can have on the lives of our residents. I am so grateful for this opportunity!”

-Judith Schellhammer, Whitley Residence

My heart swells with pride when my Sigma Chi men are successful. I encourage them to be the responsible men; I know they can be. For my Sigma Chi men to grow in character and live by the golden rule is my heart’s desire.

-Debra Nevins, Sigma Chi Fraternity

I feel very fortunate to have a never-ending group of young people in my life. Life never gets dull.

-Lois Knape, Galloway Dorm

I have LOVED my 16 years as dorm/sorority mom. It turned out to be as much a time of growth for me, as well as the students. I have wonderful memories of my “kids” and am still in touch with many of them. I will miss the campus and my colleagues, and my students very much as retirement calls my name.

-Beckie Miller, Pi Beta Phi Sorority

My favorite part of being a House Director is the GIRLS! I think they keep me young and “hoppin” around here. You have to try and stay one step ahead of them (doesn’t work at times). Their minds work in over time from the day they get dropped off in their freshman year until they go home in May. On top of that, I love working for the college. Our sense of community within the dorm and students is a force to be reckoned with. Their need to bond with each other and be as supportive is wonderful.
