HILLSDALE, Mich. — Hillsdale College announced today that it will officially accept the Classic Learning Test (CLT) as an alternative standardized entrance exam for future student admissions. The CLT is a new college entrance exam that began in 2015. Co-created by educator Jeremy Tate, it uses the texts and ideas from Western thought and the teaching of the Great Books.

Hillsdale believes the CLT is suitable in assessing potential students’ readiness for the rigors of a classical liberal arts education from Hillsdale College.

“From its founding, Hillsdale has provided an outstanding liberal education rooted in the deep study of great figures and thinkers of the Western tradition,” said David Whalen, provost and professor of English at Hillsdale. “The CLT draws upon the same tradition but does so to test a student’s aptitude rather than simply measure how well one has memorized facts. That seems very appealing to us.”

A leader in classical education, Hillsdale consistently ranks in the top 100 liberal arts colleges in America. Its core curriculum is unique among institutions of higher learning, and ensures every student, regardless of major, is well-versed in the teachings of the Western canon.
