Hillsdale College Fine Arts Presents Opera Workshop Performances
HILLSDALE, Mich. — Hillsdale College student vocalists presented scenes from various operas during Parents Weekend on Oct. 21 and 22 in Markel Auditorium. The performance featured music by Mozart, Donizetti, Hagen, and others, and was open to students, their families, faculty, staff, and members of the community.
“I am very proud of our students for their diligent work during rehearsals and for putting on a spectacular performance,” said Kristi Matson, vocal instructor at Hillsdale College. “The Opera Workshop Performances provide an excellent opportunity to showcase our students’ talent to an audience of families, friends, and the Hillsdale College community.”
Matson and Emily Douglass, artist-teacher of music at Hillsdale, co-directed the performance, which featured ten scenes in English, French, German, and Italian. Daniel Kuehler, artist-teacher of music at Hillsdale, and Tom Ryskamp, adjunct instructor of music at Hillsdale, served as the accompanists.
Open auditions were held and open to all Hillsdale College students. Fourteen student singers were selected to perform, including Brianna Lambrecht, senior music major.
“Opera workshop takes an art form that may seem unapproachable to students and makes quite approachable as well as fun,” Lambrecht said. “I have learned so much with both times I have participated and am grateful we have this opportunity each year.”
