Hillsdale College Hosts 27th Annual Summer Science Camps
Camps aim to build scientific literacy and encourage study of science
Hillsdale, Mich. – Hillsdale College hosted its 27th annual Summer Science Camps on June 25-30. The goal of the camp is to engage high school students from across Michigan and beyond in the world of modern scientific study. Designed to develop ability and excitement for science, the camps offer students the chance to get hands-on experience in various scientific fields under the tutelage of some of the Hillsdale College faculty.
“The chance to nurture a love of science in these young people is an invaluable opportunity,” said Dr. Frank Steiner, professor and chairman of biology at Hillsdale and an instructor for the molecular biology camp. “It is our hope that students leave the camps with a better understanding and appreciation of the interdisciplinary world of modern science and want to engage it in their own lives.”
Hosted on the College’s campus, the three camps covered a wide range of scientific topics, such as molecular biology, chemistry and physics, and mathematics, studying real-world applications of these subjects such as genetic engineering, nanotechnology, cryptology, and game analysis. All camp attendees had the option to receive college credit from Hillsdale for their intensive week of study by passing an exam at the end of the program.
A grant from the Donald L. Murdock Foundation covered the costs of tuition, lodging and meals for the rising high school sophomores, juniors, and seniors at each of the three camps. Sixty students from 12 states attended.
