Hillsdale College Theatre Students Perform an Original Staged Reading

HILLSDALE, Mich. — Senior Kiley Hatch, with the direction of Michael Beyer, showcased her original play, “Questions for My Mother,” in Markel Auditorium from Oct. 13-14. The show was inspired by Shakespeare’s “The Tempest,” but focused on the story from Miranda’s point of view.

“Kiley did an excellent job with this show,” Beyer said. “She created a thought-provoking show that blended a fresh take with a classic Shakespeare play. That is no easy task, especially for a young playwright, yet Kiley did an exceptional job at balancing the old with the new.”

Shakespeare’s “The Tempest,” upon which “Questions for My Mother” is based, follows Prospero, the rightful Duke of Milan, who uses sorcery to shipwreck his usurpers on the island upon which he has been marooned with his daughter, Miranda. Hatch’s production views the story from the point of view of Miranda, who has grown up on the island without a mother.

Hatch, a theatre major and Kehoe Family Initiative for Entrepreneurial Excellence fellow, hopes to pursue a career as a playwright and eventually operate her own theater.

“I have learned a lot during my time at Hillsdale. In some ways, this production feels like the culmination of my education and friendships here,” said Hatch. “I am thankful for all those who have taught me and supported me in my work.”
