Hillsdale College Jazz Big Band Performs at Elmhurst Jazz Festival

HILLSDALE, Mich. — The Hillsdale College Big Band performed at the 56th annual Elmhurst Jazz Festival on Feb. 25. Guest artists and jazz bands from other colleges and universities attended and performed at the festival. The band played “All the Things You Are,” “Human Error,” “Jamie,” and “On the Sunny Side of the Street.”

Hillsdale College Symphony Orchestra Performs in Christ Chapel

HILLSDALE, Mich. — The College Symphony Orchestra performed in Christ Chapel on Feb. 25. The orchestra, directed by Professor of Music James A. Holleman, performed the world premiere of a symphony by composer Andrew Maxfield titled “Every Leap is Faith.” The performance was commissioned by the Barlow Endowment for Music Composition at Brigham Young University. “The college was honored to work with Andrew Maxfield,” said Holleman. “He is a talented composer, and I am proud of our orchestra students for their hard work and dedication to bringing this new piece of music to life.”

Harry James Orchestra Performs at Hillsdale College

HILLSDALE, Mich. — The Harry James Orchestra returned to Hillsdale College for its fourth big band swing and jazz concert at the college on Nov. 5. The orchestra performance was directed by Fred Radke, an award-winning trumpeter who has toured with the Harry James Orchestra since 1969, becoming its director in 1989.
